THE ROAST GOOSE FESTIVAL
Bettona
- August
|

Back |
The first week in August
is dedicated to the local gastronomy of the Roast
Goose Festival. The square is set up with tables
for 1000 with specialties which have by now become
rare. All accompanied by a rich season of theatre,
music and folklore.
The idea of the "Festival" as a valorisation
of typical products originated in Bettona at the
end of the 1960's, even if then the "Queen
of the Square" was not goose, but roast pig
(porchetta), another popular dish on Umbrian tables.
The "Goose Festival" instead began in
the mid 1980's and was instantly a great success.
Roast goose represents a return to the years in
which the "noble" fowl was raised in
the barnyards of our farmers to be enjoyed on
important occasions.
This is another flavour which is slowly disappearing
from our tables, in fact it is increasingly difficult
to find this bird raised in the traditional way.
The festival in fact seeks
to rediscover and maintain these ancient flavours;
alongside of roast goose, the principal dish
of the event, one can also enjoy gnocchi and
tagliatelle with the famous goose sauce, garlic
bread made with oil from our olive groves, pork
from the "Salumificio di Bettona"
and many other products of the land around Bettona.
