St Giorgio Fires
April 23rd
St Giorgio is on the 23rd April and during this day there are propitiatory fires to hope for a good future grape harvest. It is a tradition with pagan origins, celebrated hundreds of years ago, but still present nowadays in Torgiano. In the last years and still nowadays it is animated by the “Compagnia dei Vignaioli e Tavernieri di Torgiano”.
The 23rd night fires are light with vines shoots, and so with pruning shoots. During this event there is a toast, local dishes are eaten and good wines are drunk.
The presence of these fires exists from the XVI century and Piccolpasso named them as an 'antica usanza' (ancient custom). The burning of the vine ensure the growth of new vines in the Spring period. According to the legend St Giorgio defeated a dragon, so he protected the good from the evil and he is the Saint protector warrior.
