Description:

Near the Medieval village of Collemancio, little gem a few miles from Cannara, is the archaeological site Urvinum Hortense, an ancient Roman town of which you can admire the remains at the Antiquarium Collemancio.
Exception in view of other centers of ancient Roman foundation, Urvinum lies at an altitude of 526 meters above sea level, a point of great scenic beauty from which one can dominate much of the Tiber Valley.
This dominance suggests that Urvinum had a particular role to monitor average cost centers such as Assisi, Spello, Trevi and Bettona, as well as those on the plains, as Foligno and Spoleto.
The first excavation, dating from the early XIXth century, unearthed the remains of the temple, the Christian basilica and a part of the baths of the Roman villa. Subsequently, and for a long time, the excavations came to a halt, to resume with renewd vigor in the years between 1932 and 1938.
Following the establishment of the Foundation Urvinum Hortense (1986) all the material has been inventoried, photographed and studied. Finally, in 2003 was officially opened the Antiquarium, where they are permanently exposed the rich finds from excavations material accompanied by captions that traces the history of the city.
